Slow Food Columbus
The Foodcast crew begins an exploration of the art and senses of ingredient driven menus in Columbus.  We traveled to two of our favorite restaurants to discover the who, what, when, where and why of this not so new but forgotten approach to menu creation.  The conversation begins with Brian Pawlak, head chef at Deepwood.  We then wrap things up speaking with the father and son dynamic duo of Skillet Patrick and Kevin Caskey.

The Foodcast for September 22, 2009

1:36- Events
Bethia Woolf joins the Foodcast full time as our news anchor and our newest co-host.
7:53- Mockingbird Meadows Honey
Consider the Honey Bee. Have you given much thought to how much stress modern bee keeping practices puts on the average colony? Luckily for the bees, Dawn and Carson Combs at Mockingbird Meadows have. Dawn is kind enough to take a break from her Field to Table booth to talk with us about what makes their farm special.

15:35- Time for Lunch Eat in
If you attended public school in the United States, then chances are that you don't remember the school provided lunches with any level of fondness. Slow Food USA is partnering with community leaders around the country to promote the idea of fresh whole foods in our childcare's' lunches.
Rebecca Kardas tells us about the Time for Lunch eat in that took place last weekend and what is being done locally so future generations won't be subjected to the same processed cheese pizza and frozen fish sticks that we were.

19:00- The Paw Paw Fest
Bethia and Jim head south to the 2009 Pawpaw Festival. What is a pawpaw? Why is there a festival centered around it? Listen to the show or check out this for more info.

Columbus Foodcast is a changin' and we need your help. We are considering moving to several shorter format stories for each show rather than a single long interview, but would like some feedback from you first. Drop us a line in the comments, via columbusfood@gmail.com, or over at Columbus Underground.

Donatos invited Jim and Zach over to their corporate headquarters to talk about the launch of their new hand tossed pizza, and we use the opportunity to ask them why we should feel good about giving them our business. Here is some history and a preview of why they might be a little different from your average pizza chain.

From CMHGourmand:
The 1960’s saw the beginning of another pizza powerhouse, Donatos. The Grote family took Columbus style pizza to the next level and beyond, opening many locations throughout the Midwest. The company was purchased by McDonald’s but after a few years, McDonald’s attempt at McPizza faltered and the Grote family purchased their company back for less than what they were paid originally.

Columbus bloggers invade The Inn at Cedar Falls! Jim interviews Ellen, the proprietor, to give us some background on the Inn and Spa as well as telling us a bit about their philosophy.  (Hint: local sourcing when possible and green building). Read more about the trip at Hungry Woolf and Columbus Foodie.  As always, we save the bloopers until the end - Jim demonstrates that the only hard thing about podcasting is getting the intro right.

Columbus Foodcast and the great minds behind Tacotrucks Columbus have a chat at Los Potosinos. Lydia, co-owner of Los Potosinos, was present during the introduction but her full interview was cut due to time constraints. Lydia will get her due though as she'll have an entire episode to herself in the coming weeks.

Hungrywoolf, CMHGourmand, and Taco Drew started Taco Trucks Columbus in January 09 "to try and locate, sample, and document the taco truck culture of Columbus Ohio." The local Latino population has grown to 6% up from 2.5% in 2000 and the number of Taco Trucks has seen an even more pronounced explosion. Luckily Tacotruckcolumbus.com is here as a guide with written reviews, a glossary, T-shirts, and an extensive map.

We salute you, Taco Truckers.
